How this AI image upscaler works

When you click Upscale, the tool lazy-loads the ONNX Runtime Web engine and fetches the model once (about 17MB). It caches the model in your browser's IndexedDB, so every later run starts instantly and works offline. The first upscale is the only slow one.

The model is a 4x super-resolution network. To stay within browser memory, your image is split into small overlapping tiles, each tile is upscaled by the model, and the results are stitched back together on an HTML canvas. For the 2x option, the 4x output is high-quality resampled down to the 2x target.

WebGPU with a CPU fallback

On a machine with WebGPU, inference runs on the GPU and finishes in seconds. On hardware without WebGPU, the tool falls back to a slower WebAssembly (CPU) path. The badge on the result tells you which one ran, so you always know what produced the output.

This is a real super-resolution model, not a sharpening filter dressed up as AI. It reconstructs texture and edge detail learned from training data, which is why it beats a plain bicubic resize on photos, art, and compressed JPEGs.

When to use 2x versus 4x

Use 2x when the source is already a decent size and you just need more resolution for a larger display, a retina asset, or a moderate print. Two times keeps file size and processing time down while still adding real detail over a basic resize.

Use 4x for small thumbnails, old low-resolution photos, or AI-generated stills you want to push toward print. Remember the 1024px input cap: a 1024px image at 4x already lands at 4096px, which is plenty for most web and many print uses.

Best inputs for clean results

The cleaner the source, the better the result. A sharp, properly exposed photo upscales beautifully. A heavily blurred, noisy, or postage-stamp source improves a lot but cannot become a native high-resolution capture — AI upscaling adds plausible detail, it does not recover information that was never recorded.
